Does the Government manipulate the Media or You

Does the Government manipulate the Media or You
Does the Newspaper, or Communication industry manipulate the Public? Does the Governmentmanipulate the media, and therefore us?

I can think of some examples.
Roswell New Mexico.- Was there a crashed flying saucer?
Who Shot JFK?
The waving flag on the 1969 moon landing...how could the flag blow in the breeze, when the Moon has no wind????

I got more. Come to class or post your stories!!

I guess we're just suppose to leave a comment?

Anyway the first thing that came to my mind when I saw this didn't have to do with the government manipulating us, but rather the people who present the media to us. The infamous case of Stephen Glass came to my mind or as wikipedia calls him, the "disgraced journalist". Although at the time while he was writing for "The New Republic", he gained great recognition for his stories, but that's what they were... stories. He blatently made up stories, events, and quotes in his journalism stories. He had the public fooled until he was caught when someone decided to research the events of his article, "Hacker Heaven". When that was exposed, it led to his downfall. However it's surprising how he duped the public for so long. It goes to show that you can't trust everything that the media tells you.
An example of how the Government manipulates the public lies with North Korea. I remember it made big headlines a few years ago when truth was revealed. North Korea leaked propaganda showing how cultured and devoted their citizens were which led the world to think that the country was something great. However foriegn cameras were not allowed in the country for what reason? To hide the fact that its people live in supression and poverty. The public pretty much believed the propaganda that North Korea was feeding them, but when images of the poor conditions of their citizens were revealed, only then did people realize something was wrong.
Another issue which I think we will be looking into later is the Jessica Lynch story or rather any news about the war in the Middle East. Its a fact that we can't be in the Middle East witnessing all the things happening there and therefore rely on the government and media to bring us news. However I suppose the reserve they right to censorship and therefore we don't get the whole, or real story at times. The Jessica Lynch story is kind of a blur to me right now, but I think it had to do with the army releasing a false rendition of her capture and release and told a story of her bravery to save herself and perhaps other hostages, but Lynch was denying such things. Like I said, I don't remember too much about the story. I think another point of view to it was that the military was trying to gain recognition by falsifying the story. There is another story similar to this one, but the name of the man slips my mind. He passed away I believe, but I think his family came out to the public demanding that the true story of his death come out and not the fabricated one that glorified it. But it is in such sense that the military wanted to gain recognition from the suffering of others by making up these glorified stories concerning its people.
How does the government and media manipulate us? Well the tell us what they want to and keep from us what they don't want us to know. I guess that's their right concerning censorship, but it's our right as the public to know the truth.
Well that's it, that's all. Those were just a few examples, I hope that's enough.

Does the government manipulate the media and/or you? this is a question that i have not came across with before. Kids like me--preferable around my age group--dont really think about this stuff yet, we are still in the middle of that "mommy, give me the bottle" and "whatever, ill do it myself". This fact is also right on how we face fact and fiction. I assume that most people are too lazy to dig in the news, they rather have themselves "spoon-fed". This is to the government's advantage of course.

The first example that i found very intreguing was the roswell crash incident. the government tried to cover it up. i--for one--would like the truth, rather than the government covering the crash up (probably because they'd think people will panic).
The second example is the Bill Clinton case where he suddenly attacked Iraq right when he was on the point of his trial for having an affair. It was unfair to the people--especially to the people in Iraq. It seemed like he was willing to sacrifice people just to save his ass (pardon my french).
The last example is the issue of 'weapons of mass destruction' set by our neighbor-country's president George Bush. As I was informed, their were no weapons of that 'mass destruction' calibur were found. But instead, it was a strange coinsidence that G. Bush declared war to Iraq when his popularity is going down. Many people would say that he did try to cover himself up by war--another selfish example of how government manipulate the media and the people.

Does the government manipulate the media and/or us? I think that they can and they probably have, had, and still will. As long as the government has things to hide, they would never stop in manipulating the media and us.
